Teaching Kathak

Kathak is a major dance style of North India and has evolved from a simple, devotional mimetic recitation of the Kathakars who were storytellers. In its technique, Kathak gives equal importance to pure dance and mime. The pure dance form is marketed by intensive footwork, Layakari, in which lightning pirouettes and complex variations on the rhythm patterns by the dancer compete with the percussionist. Mime concerns itself mainly with retelling some incidents in the life of Lord Krishna.

Kathak Classes– Our belief is that method of teaching Kathak should not be limited to just a typical guru/shishya relationship found in India that is daunting and intimidating. Instead, it should be a more friendly and close-knit environment with personal attention to every child. Each child has their own individual talent that needs to be tapped and encouraged. We believe Kathak is not just a dance form, rather a door opener for girls- a great foundation to begin training about culture, tradition, and etiquettes. This style, while stepped in tradition is also a modern take on teaching Kathak, therefore making it easily transferable to any other dance form: Jazz, Ballet, Bharatnatyam, Bollywood, etc. In essence, the aim is to build a social classical foundation to pursue whatever you want in the future. In the curriculum, we aim to develop an interest of the student in learning some shlokas, mythology, and taal. Dance should be regarded as a way to keep culture, history, and values alive while learning a beautiful dance form.
